About Ohio University

Ohio University, also known as OHIO or OU, is a public university located in Athens, which is the largest city and the county seat of Athens County, in the US state of Ohio, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 22 000 inhabitants, during the 2007 census. Athens is also the principal city of the Athens, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area and it is a qualified Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, the Tree City USA being a tree planting and tree care program for US cities and towns.

OU was founded in 1804, one year after Ohio was admitted to the Union, and it is the oldest university in the state, the 9th oldest public university in USA and the 2nd oldest university in the Northwest Territory, after Vincennes University, which was founded 2 years before OU. Ohio University is academically organized into several colleges, through which it offers educational programs in various fields of study, including: College of Arts & Sciences, College of Health and Human Services, College of Osteopathic Medicine and Honors Tutorial College.

OHIO is well known for its student success rate in competing for nationally competitive awards, in 2006, 12 of its students receiving Fulbright scholarships, while in 2004 and 2005 it had 9 Fulbright Scholars, the university being classified as Tier 1 University by U.S. News ranking of Best American Colleges. It was also named a Doctoral/High Research Activity institution, by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, due to its growing number of graduate programs.

OHIO’s athletic teams are known as the Ohio Bobcats, who compete in NCAA Division I, the university being a member of the Mid-American Conference, maintaining strong rivalries with the other MAC schools in Ohio, particularly Miami University. One of the most successful sports at the university is the men’s basketball program, in which the Bobcats won 5 Mid-American Conference tournament titles in 1983, 1985, 1994, 2005, and 2010 as well as 9 MAC regular season titles, between 1960 and 1994, among other notable achievements.

The list of notable OU alumni is long, among the most resonant names being: Clarence Page - Pulitzer Prize winning Chicago Tribune columnist, Venki Ramakrishnan - Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Richard Dean Anderson - actor, most known as MacGyver, Robert D. Walter - founder, Cardinal Health, Mike Schmidt - Baseball Hall of Fame third baseman, and Matt Lauer - journalist, known for hosting the Today show, among others.
